Saigon is one of the most backpacker-friendly major cities in Southeast Asia — not because it has the most hostels or the most traveller infrastructure, but because genuinely excellent food costs almost nothing, many of the best experiences are free or very cheap, and the city rewards walking and exploring in ways that more polished tourist destinations don’t. This itinerary is built around a $20–25 USD per day total budget including accommodation, food, transport, and activities.
Budget accommodation
Bùi Viện and Đề Thám Streets in District 1 are the backpacker centre. Dormitory beds in clean, well-run hostels cost 150,000–250,000 VND ($6–10) per night. Private rooms in budget guesthouses run 300,000–450,000 VND ($12–18). Many hostels include a simple breakfast. Recommended areas beyond Bùi Viện: Pham Ngu Lao Street (adjacent, same price range) and southern District 3 (quieter, same or slightly cheaper, better local food within walking distance).
Free and cheap activities
The best things in Saigon cost almost nothing: walking the streets of District 3 and District 5, the Jade Emperor Pagoda (free), the exterior of Notre Dame Cathedral (free), the Central Post Office interior (free), the Nguyen Hue Boulevard and riverfront (free), any wet market in the city (free to walk through). The two main paid attractions — War Remnants Museum (40,000 VND) and Reunification Palace (40,000 VND) — are among the cheapest and most worthwhile museum experiences in Southeast Asia.
Budget food strategy
Eat at cơm bình dân stalls for lunch (35,000–55,000 VND for a full plate of rice with two or three toppings). Eat phở or hủ tiếu for breakfast from a street cart (40,000–55,000 VND). Drink cà phê sữa đá from plastic-stool cafés (20,000–25,000 VND). Drink bia hơi in the evenings (10,000–20,000 VND per glass). Avoid restaurants with English menus on their boards and menus showing photos of dishes — these are marketing signals that the prices are tourist-oriented. The identical food is available two streets away for half the price.
